Farm animals in Ontario need your help!

The Ontario government’s proposed Bill-156, also known as the “Ag Gag” bill, is a dangerous piece of legislation.

The Ontario government’s proposed Bill-156 (An Act to Protect Ontario’s Farms and Farm Animals From Trespassers and Other Forms Of Interference and to Prevent Contamination of Ontario’s Food Supply), also known as the “Ag Gag” bill, is a dangerous piece of legislation. If passed, this law would prevent concerned individuals from documenting the treatment of farmed animals on farms and speaking out against any cruelty, abuse or mistreatment of animals.

The bill not only threatens animal welfare by criminalizing those who would speak out to report mistreat of animals, including whistleblowers working on a farm, in a slaughterhouse, or other animal use facility, but it is also a violation to our right to free speech.

This past Monday, World Animal Protection spoke before the Ontario Legislature to oppose Bill 156. Despite the intense opposition to the bill, from animal protection organizations, lawyers and journalists, we are concerned the government will pass the bill, nonetheless.

The bill will go back to committee one Friday June 12, where it will be studied clause by clause, and then it will go back to the Ontario legislature for its final vote early next week. If passed into law, this bill could risk both human rights and animal welfare.
