Animal Protector timeline

The World Federation for the Protection of Animals (WFPA) was formed in 1950. In 2014, we would become World Animal Protection.

WSPA staff member John Walsh heroically directed the successful rescue and relocation of almost 10,000 animals in Suriname, South America, after 600 square miles of rainforest were carelessly flooded during the construction of a hydroelectric dam.

Under the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), we launched our campaign against bullfighting. Supporters helped move close to 50 cities in France and Spain to ban bullfighting.

1990

We were in Sierra Leone to help thousands of dogs on the streets, often forgotten by locals for fear of rabies.

1992

The launch of our 'Libearty' campaign worked to end the cruelty and exploitation suffered by bears. With the help of Animal Protectors, bears globally have been protected for over 30 years.

Boots were on the ground in Montserrat following a volcanic eruption, thanks to monthly support.

There is an official ban on bear baiting in Pakistan. The first bear confiscated from an event is Rustam.

Supporters helped us launch our Long-Distance Transport Campaign, kicking off our farming work in Canada.

2008

Along with Zoocheck, we convinced the province of Alberta to introduce regulations and standards, forcing 7 'roadside zoos' to close.

With help from Animal Protectors, we supported Amis des Bonobos du Congo with a world-first release of bonobos into the wild.

2012

We hosted the world's first-ever symposium on the impact of marine litter on animal welfare, inspiring international experts to sign our declaration to protect marine animals.

All 28 Indian states signed on to a groundbreaking agreement that includes animals in their disaster and emergency plans, protecting billions of animals.

Animal Protectors help Bruno become the millionth recipient of our rabies vaccinations.
