In June, a 4-month-old cub named Kenya was brought to our partners at the Libearty Sanctuary in Romania. The tiny cub, who is shown below receiving medical care at Libearty after her rescue, had somehow fallen into a river and was stuck in the water for more than a day. Luckily, some tourists called authorities for help and she was brought to safety. Kenya arrived at Libearty in a poor condition, weighing just around 6 lbs.

Kenya was in critical condition - dehydrated, very weak and couldn’t walk. Vets examined her and found a hematoma on her shoulder and a fly larvae infection. She was quickly given vitamins, anti-inflammatories, and deworming treatments to help her begin healing.

The staff at Libearty told us that after a good long nap, Kenya managed to drink a whole bottle of milk. She is now eating and growing stronger every day!

Kenya’s not the only vulnerable cub to be brought to Libearty this month. A mother bear and her three cubs entered a small village in Romania. The local villagers tried to scare the family off by making clanging noises with pots and pans. Sadly, the mother fled and her cubs were left to climb up a tree.

Local authorities came to rescue the cubs and put them back in the forest, where they hoped Mom would find them. Heartbreakingly, one of the cubs was hit by a car and another disappeared.

Thankfully, the third cub was brought to Libearty. The team there named her Bamsee and she is being well looked after by sanctuary staff.

After receiving medical attention, the two cubs were released together into their new enclosure this month. Check out pictures of the two cubs exploring their new home.
