Kenya drought: why disaster preparedness is important

With an impending drought in Turkana County in the North-East of Kenya, we’ve been on the ground assessing the situation to see what animal welfare challenges face the region. Fast depleting water sources and lack of pasture mean thousands of animals and humans face the risk of starvation and death.

As a community that depends on animals for their livelihood, it is crucial for the region to receive proper disaster relief support. Slow-onset disasters like these are best addressed through better preparedness and investment in water infrastructure by local government authorities. 

Based on our assessment findings, we’re looking to respond by working in partnership with the National Drought Management Authority and the County Department of Livestock Management to provide support in livestock emergency training.
