Tapirs thrive when protected

Blog

On this World Tapir Day, meet Paqua and Lola – tapirs showing how animals can flourish when their habitats are safe. Watch how protection helps tapirs, rainforests and entire ecosystems thrive.

On this World Tapir Day, we’re celebrating the remarkable tapirs of Tapir Valley Nature Reserve in Costa Rica – gentle, shy rainforest animals who can thrive when their habitats are safe.

Today, we are proud to welcome Tapir Valley as our newest aspiring Wildlife Heritage Area, where passionate people dedicate their lives to protecting wild animals and visitors can experience something truly inspiring. Wildlife Heritage Areas exist to connect conservation-driven communities with responsible travelers who want meaningful, unique and authentic experiences – and Tapir Valley embodies that mission completely.

Paqua and Lola live in a place where forests, wildlife and ecosystems are protected. Here, tapirs can roam, eat and rest without disturbance – the kind of safety that allows wildlife to flourish.

Watch the video below to see how protection can make a real difference for tapirs, rainforests and the other animals that depend on them:

When animals have safe places to live, entire ecosystems can regenerate and grow — and the communities connected to them benefit too.

This World Tapir Day, let’s celebrate the power of protection and the future it can create for wildlife everywhere.

When animals thrive, we all do.

Animals hold incredible power.

They inspire joy, offer companionship and provide a deeper connection to nature. But their power is much greater than their influence on our daily lives. At World Animal Protection, we believe that prioritizing the wellbeing of animals is the key to healing our wounded planet.
