Stopping factory farming before it starts in Nigeria

Blog

JBS plans to expand factory farming into Nigeria, threatening animals, communities and the environment. Learn how we’re fighting to protect the country’s sustainable farming traditions.

A new threat to animals, people and the planet is on the horizon.

JBS, the world’s largest meat company, is planning to build six massive slaughterhouses in Nigeria. If they succeed, factory farming will take hold, bringing with it suffering, environmental destruction and harm to local communities.

But there’s still time to stop it.

At World Animal Protection, we’re working to protect animals before they’re trapped in cages and crates. That’s why we’re taking urgent action to stop JBS’s expansion and push for a better future in Nigeria, one that supports animals, local farmers and the environment.

Why Nigeria?

Nigeria is at a crossroads. It has a rich tradition of small-scale, sustainable agriculture that supports families and treats animals with care. But companies like JBS want to replace this with an industrial model, one that maximizes profit at the cost of animals’ well-being, food system stability and environmental health.

If factory farming takes root, it will be incredibly hard to undo the damage.

That’s why it’s critical we act now.

What’s at stake

Factory farms are the biggest cause of animal suffering in the world. Animals are locked in cages and denied the chance to move, socialize or feel the sun on their skin. But the harm doesn’t stop there.

  • Local farmers lose their livelihoods as large corporations undercut traditional agriculture.
  • Communities face pollution and water contamination from massive amounts of animal waste.
  • Wildlife habitats are destroyed to make way for industrial farming.
  • Public health is put at risk, with factory farms creating breeding grounds for new diseases and antibiotic resistance.

We can’t let JBS bring this destruction to Nigeria.

How we’re fighting back

World Animal Protection is working with local partners to:

  • Raise awareness of the dangers of factory farming
  • Pressure decision-makers to reject JBS’s expansion plans
  • Promote sustainable, humane farming practices that protect animals and communities
  • Empower citizens and campaigners across Nigeria to speak out for a better future

But we need your help to keep the pressure on.

You can help stop factory farming in Nigeria and your gift will be doubled

Right now, you have the power to protect animals before they suffer and your impact will go twice as far.

Until May 31, every dollar you give will be matched up to $60,000. That means you’ll help stop factory farming from taking hold in Nigeria, while supporting farming systems that are better for animals, people and the planet.

Your matched gift will help:

  • Support local advocacy in Nigeria to oppose JBS’s expansion
  • Expose the true cost of factory farming to animals, communities and the environment
  • Build global pressure on JBS to halt their plans
  • Promote sustainable, humane farming rooted in compassion and local tradition

Together, we can stop suffering before it starts and create a future where animals are treated with care.

We hope you’ll join us in this urgent fight.
