I’ve witnessed both thriving farms and the harsh realities of factory farming. What we do for animals shapes the health of people and the planet.
I’ve spent most of my life around farms, and in that time, I’ve seen two very different worlds. One is full of life, care and connection – animals grazing freely, farmers who know every animal by name and a sense of rhythm that comes from living close to the land. The other is a world I wish I could unsee: factory farming operations where animals live short, fearful lives, exposed to the elements, packed tightly into pens with no room to lie down or move comfortably.
Factory farming doesn’t just harm animals – it harms people and the planet too. Polluted rivers, degraded soil, climate change and the overuse of antibiotics in stressed, sick animals all ripple outwards, threatening communities and public health. Crowded, stressed animals are more susceptible to disease, and the medicines we rely on for human health lose effectiveness over time. Public health experts warn that systems like this could even be the source of future pandemics.
It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of such a massive system. Corporations profit from that sense of helplessness, hoping we’ll shrug and accept things as they are. But change is possible, and I’ve seen it in action. Farmers are searching for better ways to raise animals, communities are demanding safer food and cleaner land and governments are beginning to listen.
I’ve spent years seeing both sides of farming, and I firmly believe that when animals thrive, we all thrive. Protecting animals is not just about rescue. It’s about creating a food system that supports farmers, restores ecosystems and safeguards human health. Every step we take, from exposing suffering, helping farmers adopt sustainable practices, supporting sanctuaries to advocating for better policies, moves us closer to a world where care, dignity and balance are central.
The fight to end factory farming is not just about the animals. It’s about building a future where compassion shapes the way we relate to every living being. And I’ve seen, time and again, that when people take action, real change is possible.
Because the way we treat animals reflects the kind of world we want to live in: one where life is valued, where compassion guides us and where thriving is possible for all.
