Let’s shop differently

We can all do more, when we know more

And when it comes to choosing the food we eat, the countless labels don’t always make it easier.

At World Animal Protection, we’re committed to ensuring that all farm animals are treated humanely and helping you to understand exactly what that means.

With your help, we can ensure farm animals have better lives, so we can be healthier and feel good about choosing humanely raised food.

Choosing to eat less meat and higher welfare products is better for animals, people, and the planet. Food produced through humane farming methods, including high welfare free range and organic production can also have health benefits for you, and is better for the environment.

Our food systems are geared to maximize production, but we haven’t curbed the negative impacts on animal welfare, the environment and human health.

The impact on animals is huge

More than 70 billion animals are farmed for food each year and production is expected to keep rising.

Right now, 50 billion of those farm animals are born on factory farms – intensive, large-scale farms that prioritize methods to increase production. Animals are confined in tight spaces, unable to move freely or express their natural behaviours.

These animals deserve better. In fact, we all deserve better.

Whether it’s superbugs potentially being created on factory farms, or demand for meat contributing to emissions, it’s time to understand that how we treat animals impacts the health of people, animals and the planet.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, demand for meat is projected to rise nearly 73% between 2010 and 2030; demand for dairy is expected to rise 58 percent.

If we continue down this path, these crises are going to get worse. We have to take action to curb these issues now.

Our food systems have the wrong priorities. By switching to alternative proteins and high welfare animal products we can curb these issues and even improve our food security.

World Animal Protection is working to make this a reality by:

  • Working across the globe to put an end to factory farming and building an equitable, humane and sustainable food system.
  • Putting pressure on leading companies to reshape the food industry, move away from factory farming and promote humane and plant-based foods.
  • Ensuring people have easy access to more healthy and sustainable plant-based proteins.
  • Pushing for financial investments to be directed away from factory farming towards humane and plant-based foods.
