Along with the Northwest Straits Foundation, our partner in the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, we launched a project to remove a huge section of ghost fishing nets off of Pender Island, British Columbia. Since before 1990, these nets had been disrupting the environment and killing or injuring marine animals.
The two-day long project involved a team of divers removing the net from the reef by hand, freeing any entrapped animals and pulling the net on-board.
Over 2,500 pounds of netting was removed from the ocean which was then sent for analysis and potential recycling.
Thanks to this project, sea animals that live in the waters off Pender Island will be safer and the ocean ecosystem will be healthier.
